State Hospital Alternative
The State Hospital Alternative is an extension of KVC’s Acute Psychiatric Hospitals, located in Kansas City and Hays, Kansas. The hospitals provide a short-term program with brief, intensive treatment to help stabilize youth who often pose a high risk of self-harm or violence to others.
The program was designed specifically for children ages 6-18 who were previously served in state hospitals in Kansas, need hospitalization for serious mental health conditions and may require both acute and sub-acute services. These youth often present behaviors and special needs that negatively impact them in home and school settings, including verbal and physical violence, psychosis or an inability to care for themselves.
