State Hospital Alternative
KVC operates the only state hospitals for children in the state of Kansas. As the alternative to state hospitalization, KVC admits children and adolescents with severe psychiatric diagnoses, severe emotional disturbances, substance abuse or mental illness. Historically children in this setting require a longer length of stay than children served in acute psychiatric hospitals; therefore, we provide necessary medical treatment services and blend physical and mental health treatment plans to meet special needs. This is all done in a safe and monitored environment.
For all youth, we make it our goal to reduce the conditions that led to hospitalization and help them develop skills so they may return home safely, or to a less restrictive environment. KVC also coordinates continuing aftercare services for children and families through collaboration with community providers.
