Suicide has become a major public health issue and families across the United States are in crisis as suicide has become the second leading cause of death for people aged 10 to 34. Here at KVC\, we know we all need connection. And that drives our dedication to stopping suicide in its tracks. Take a look at our suicide prevention efforts\, and explore how our work at KVC is making an impact. \nGet Involved: As KVC and other mental health organizations work to improve access to mental healthcare\, individuals can take steps to care for their own mental health and encourage others to do the same. You can make a real difference as you increase your awareness and gain helpful tools. Learn what you can do to help prevent suicide.  \n  \nKVC Resources on Suicide Awareness & Support

SUMMARY:National Kinship Care Month
DESCRIPTION:It’s National Kinship Care Month\, a time to honor the role of relatives and non-related kin who provide loving homes for children when their birth parents are unable to care for them. This might include grandparents\, aunts\, uncles\, siblings\, family friends\, coaches\, teachers or neighbors who have an existing relationship with the child. The goal of kinship care is to maintain the child’s connection to their normal surroundings — both family and community. \nWhen a child needs to be placed out of home\, finding caring relatives or non-related kin such as teachers or neighbors is a top priority for KVC. “We dig deep into the family tree and try to contact anyone for possible placement\,” shares Kimberly Smith\, LPC\, Director of Kinship Services. “Kinship care can be more like building a family forest than a family tree.” Kinship care helps children maintain connections to their roots and receive the support and love of their extended family.
