What does KVC do?
In West Virginia, we provide foster care and outpatient psychiatric and behavioral health services. As part of our core business, we also offer a comprehensive network of behavioral healthcare services to support children and families in crisis.
How can I become a foster parent?
Guidelines for becoming a foster parent vary from state to state, however, to meet general requirements you must:
- Be at least 21 years of age
- Be either single or married
- Be able to meet basic income guidelines
- Be able to provide adequate bedroom space and a separate bed for each foster child
- Have reliable transportation
- Be willing to complete 30 hours of free training in PRIDE (Parent Resource Information Development and Education)
- Agree to use non-physical discipline for children
- Be willing for everyone in your household to undergo complete background checks. Licenses will be fingerprinted as part of the federal Adam Walsh Act

Do I have to be perfect to qualify as a foster parent?
No one is perfect. We look for loving, caring adults who want to make a positive impact in a child’s life. You can be single or married; a home owner or an apartment dweller.
How many children need foster parents?
The need for foster parents never ends. Each day, children who have been abused or neglected come to KVC. We have staff on call 24/7 to find a child a safe, loving foster home.
How do I know if my child needs psychiatric treatment?
If you suspect your child may require mental heath treatment, please set up an appointment with one of KVC’s trained psychiatrists. Our staff will analyze the needs of your child and inform you of your care options. The psychiatrist will then guide you through the individual steps of how to help your child and may recommend KVC’s outpatient services if necessary.
Is there some way I can help KVC kids without becoming a foster or adoptive parent?
Yes. We have tremendous needs for community support everything from Christmas gifts for children to everyday items ---- like furniture for teens transitioning out of foster care into independent living. You can also become involved in fundraising at KVC or make a monetary donation.
Are there any events in my area I can attend to learn more about KVC and its services?
