Oscar winner Sandra Bullock has adopted her second child, 3-year-old Laila, whom she has cared for since she entered foster care in Louisiana as a baby. Laila now joins 5-year-old brother Louis, and in the latest issue of PEOPLE Magazine, Sandra says, “There’s no doubt in my mind that she was supposed to be here.”

bullockThroughout the entire adoption journey, Sandra’s main concern was protecting the little girl’s privacy. She feared that her stardom could jeopardize the entire adoption process since states legally require foster parents to protect the privacy and confidentially of children, youth and families involved in the child welfare system. When paparazzi snapped a photo of the trio during a trip to the emergency room, Sandra’s lawyers were called in to keep Laila protected before the adoption was finalized.

“Most foster children are in foster care because they were taken from their birth homes under tragic circumstances — and the last thing I wanted was to bring more harm to her because of the nature of my job,” she says.
