Health Professionals Gather for Child Trauma Training

On Tuesday, July 8, hundreds of physical and mental health professionals, social workers and nonprofit organizations gathered at Memorial Auditorium in Pittsburg, KS to learn about childhood traumatic stress.

The seminar shined a light on the number of people in the general population who have been exposed to a major trauma, and revealed that children make up a stunning percentage of that group. Participants not only discovered the meaning, impact and relevance of trauma, but learned effective ways to address and treat those affected or dealing with trauma.

The workshop was offered free of charge as part of the NYU/KVC Midwest Trauma Training Center. It was led by Mary Dino, LCSW for the NYU Child Study Center, and Kelly McCauley, Director of Evidence-Based Initiatives at KVC Health Systems. This innovative training center provides expertise to clinicians throughout the Midwest, promoting the use of effective trauma treatment and services for children, adolescents and families.

Trauma training is especially important for those involved in providing foster care to children. The state of Kansas contracts with KVC to provide foster care for more than half of all children in the child welfare system (more than 3,000 currently). KVC recruits and trains foster parents to support children as they recover from the trauma and/or neglect they have experienced.
