How KVC Team Members Change Lives One Relationship at a Time

8 Stories Every Social Worker & Mental Health Clinician Needs to Hear

Behind every success story is a relationship built on patience, trust and care — and those connections leave a lasting impact. At KVC, change often starts in quiet moments — a call answered with compassion, a child realizing someone will stay, a foster parent learning to connect or a coworker offering support during an impossible season.

Every day, KVC team members step into difficult moments alongside children, families and one another. While the work can be challenging, it’s also deeply human.

In this article, our social workers and mental health clinicians share the moments when they understood just how meaningful the connections that they were making with clients are.

Creating a Ripple of Connection

“When I started my career as a KVC case manager back in 2009, I was full of hope, nerves, and a deep sense of responsibility,” Jessica recalls. “Among my very first cases was a sibling group of three sisters, who had already seen more of life’s hardships than most adults I knew.”

While all three impacted Jessica, “the middle sister etched herself into my heart.” Jessica was there throughout her adoption process and maintained contact even after her professional role ended.

Jessica saw her grow into a strong young woman who reached out to Jessica for help when a friend was in an abusive environment. “I walked her through the steps, guiding her as she prepared to make the report,” Jessica remembers.

“When the crisis settled, we continued messaging, catching up on the years between us.”  Jessica never expected that the impact she made on this young woman would come back to touch her when she needed it most.

She messaged Jessica and said, “When I think of people who helped me be the better version of me, you are near the top of the list. So thank YOU. I’m one of many you helped. I hope you know you’re a super amazing human.”

These words reignited a flame inside of Jessica that had been flickering. “In that moment, all the paperwork, the long nights, the hard decisions of this work faded into the background,” said Jessica. “What remained was the simple truth: one bond, one connection, can ripple through a lifetime.”

Clinical Expertise Empowering Families to Connect

Building trust between a child and foster parent can take time. For many reasons, that connection might not happen right away. It’s not about a lack of love or effort. It may be that a child needs support in a way that matches where they are developmentally.

Through mental health support and coaching, we help foster parents better understand each child’s needs so they can build stronger, more connected relationships.

That was true for 13-year-old Megan, who initially struggled to bond with her foster parents. We helped Megan complete a Neurosequential Model Brain Metric © (NMT Brain Map), to help her foster parents better understand what she needed and help them communicate with her.

KVC team member Andrew, who helped with Megan’s NMT Brain Map, recently got this update from Megan’s CASA (a court-appointed special advocate): “I wanted you to be aware of how valuable your work has been. We recently met again, and [Megan] is improving substantially as the foster parents are utilizing [the] results and recommendations you provided! Adoption is on the horizon.”

“Sometimes, foster parents just need a little guidance in the amazing work they do to help them move from ‘foster parent’ to ‘forever parent,’” Andrew says.

One Caring Adult Brightens the Future for Youth

Trevor grew up watching his grandparents care for hundreds of children as foster parents.

“Growing up around that kind of unwavering kindness, I didn’t always realize its impact,” Trevor recalls. “But the older I got, the clearer it became: they weren’t just offering shelter, they were rebuilding trust in people who had every reason to lose it.”

Now, Trevor carries that care and compassion into his own career at Camber Mental Health, KVC’s inpatient mental health hospital network. “Without fully realizing it, I carried their spirit into my own path.”

“What my grandparents taught me is that the presence of just one uplifting adult can change the trajectory of a young life,” Trevor says. “They showed me that people are not broken beyond repair, and that every person deserves at least one someone who believes in their future, even when they can’t yet see it for themselves.”

Trevor continues, “I work in a place where many arrive feeling unseen, unheard, and undone. But thanks to my grandparents, I know what it looks like to believe in the goodness of others, even in their hardest moments.”

Each Interaction is an Opportunity for Connection

When a mom looking into Camber Mental Health for PRTF (psychiatric residential treatment facility) services called, Janny, Camber Mental Health’s Director of Admissions, was happy to help. Janny answered her questions and walked her through the process of accessing treatment for her child.

This parent cried with gratitude that Janny took the time to help, after feeling dismissed by every other organization she called. This call reminded Janny of how impactful it can be to walk alongside a family in need.

“Any parent, referral partner or client I come into contact with, I intentionally try to connect with and ensure they feel supported, even if just for 10 minutes,” says Janny. “And as a director, I love seeing and knowing that my staff in the admissions department have the same values in their heart too.”

Change is Possible with the Right People in Your Corner

Some parents come to us during one of the hardest times in their lives, facing overwhelming challenges as they work to safely reunite with their children. But KVC team members like Hannah never give up. They remind parents that change is possible and they don’t have to face these challenges alone.

Hannah worked with a mother who was struggling with substance abuse. “Throughout our services, she had talked about her struggles with trying to do this alone for so long and how it had never worked,” says Hannah.

“She said she felt this time was different because of her KVC team.”

And she was right: After six months, this mother safely reunited with her children!

“She had told me that being with KVC was the longest time she had ever been sober and felt so supported throughout services,” Hannah shares. “She was my first successful closure and seeing her face when I gave her the completion certificate meant everything to me.”

Creating Hope in Uncertain Times

When a child returns home after receiving care from Camber Mental Health’s hospitals or residential treatment centers, parents and caregivers may feel anxious or unsure about what comes next. These transitions can feel overwhelming, but they’re some of the moments that matter most to Camber Mental Health team member, Megan.

“I love being able to turn a conversation around from one of crisis and doubt to one of hope and perseverance,” shares Megan. “Life isn’t easy, and I strive to help families believe they can be okay again. If I can be a calm and supportive voice in times of uncertainty, even if just for one person, then I know I’ve made a difference.”

Remembering the Lives Impacted

When Dom first began working at Camber Mental Health, a client gave him a note thanking him for helping them feel seen and safe. That note reminded Dom why this work matters.

He saved it in his “client keepsake binder,” a collection of notes, coloring pages and other memories that he’s kept since the beginning of his mental health career.

“Basically, every note, every coloring page a client makes me, I have them date and sign their first name, and I put it in my binder. It’s a helpful reminder for me that what we do matters and that we have the opportunity to make an impactful difference, even if it is just one kid at a time,” explains Dom.

The Power of Building Healing Relationships with Clients

Gabrielle has been with KVC for less than a year, but she already has a memory she’ll never forget.

After a hard visit with his parents, a child Gabrielle worked with was afraid he’d be left again. He asked her, “You’re not going to leave, too, are you?”

In that moment, he needed someone he could count on. Gabrielle knew she needed to be that steady person for him.

“Even though I’m still new, that moment reminded me why I came into this work,” shares Gabrielle. “These kids don’t need us to be perfect. They need us to be present. To be steady. To stay. And even in just a short time, I’ve learned that sometimes the most powerful difference we can make is simply showing up and meaning it.”
