The Inspiring Reason People Are Getting Semicolon Tattoos

In English grammar, a semicolon represents a pause in a sentence where the author could have ended, but chose not to. A new movement called Project Semicolon is also using this punctuation as a way to break the stigma and promote discussion about depression, suicide and mental illness.

Project Semicolon began in 2013 when founder Amy Bleuel wanted to honor her father whom she had lost to suicide. Through her use of the semicolon, many other people related to the struggle of depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide and their will to continue on. It quickly became clear that the symbol was about more than just one person, and the project developed to encourage people to continue their story and inspire others struggling with depression, suicide, addiction and self-injury.

“In literature, the semicolon is used when an author chooses not to end the sentence. You’re the author, the sentence is your life, and you’re choosing to continue.” -Amy Bleuel

Bleuel’s simple concept has grown into a worldwide movement. The project’s Facebook page has over 100,000 likes and is filled with drawings and tattoos of the semicolon symbol. People around the world see the semicolon as a reminder that their story is not over, and to keep going. To learn more, visit the Project Semicolon website, or follow them on Facebook and Twitter.
